Pros:

• Can be cheaper in some cases, if you are all alone
• If you are expecting you will have the same routes every day, like going from home to a relative or friend’s place and then back, this is for you.
• Family Friendly
• Roads are great so less driving fatigue

Cons:

• Way less freedom for a tourist.
• Will not take you to anyplace of your choice. Unless your place of choice happens to be one their stops. So many a times, you will have to take a cab.

The pros and cons can be weighed as per your travel nature and it can be seen what suits your needs. However, renting is just generally much more fun. It can add a lot to your trip as well. To be honest, the public transportation of Dubai does not consist of the Iconic Double decker from London or the black cabs. Neither do they have those yellow cabs from New York.
